Cornelius, the Famed Kellogg’s Corn Flakes Mascot, Changes Feathers to Usher in the Year of the Rooster

MISSISSAUGA, ON (January 24, 2017) – On January 28th, 2017, fireworks will light the sky and families will come together as Canadians from coast-to-coast celebrate the Lunar New Year. To help the Chinese Canadian community get the New Year off to a great start, and to toast the contribution of new Canadians to the cultural mosaic of Canada, Kellogg’s Corn Flakes cereal has released a celebratory Chinese New Year package.

The special-edition packaging, available in limited quantities nationwide, includes:

  • A festively stylized Cornelius the Rooster decorated in the traditional red and gold of the holiday along with culturally-inspired graphics;
  • Traditional Chinese New Year well wishes written in Mandarin; and
  • Fun and interesting facts about the Year of the Rooster.

“The Chinese Canadian community has made an immeasurable contribution to Canada,” said Lores Tomé, Director, Communications & Corporate Affairs, Kellogg Canada Inc. “The creation of this special-edition box of Corn Flakes cereal, the legacy product that launched Kellogg, exemplifies our commitment to welcoming new Canadians and helping nourish a great start for them and their families in Canada. On behalf of Kellogg Canada, I extend warm wishes to all those celebrating the Year of the Rooster.”

To add a bit of traditional fun, the back panel of the celebratory special-edition pack features eight simple steps for creating a Zhezhi rooster. The instructions also encourage creative consumers to try out one of three suggested combs on their paper rooster. Zhezhi is the centuries-old Chinese art of paper folding. It was originally used for ceremonial purposes.

Kellogg’s Corn Flakes was Kellogg Company’s very first product when it was founded in 1906 and, in the century since, has grown into a breakfast favorite around the world. It wasn’t until 1950, however, that its now iconic mascot, Cornelius the Rooster, made his debut. Since that time, his signature green body, red comb and yellow beak have been a mainstay on store shelves in Canada and globally. A happy-go-lucky and confident rooster, Cornelius knows that a bowl of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes is a great way to start the day!  With such a rich history, it seems only fitting that Cornelius has put on some very special feathers to mark the Year of the Rooster.

Wake Up to a Great Start
For Chinese Canadians of all ages, a bowl full of crisp, golden, delicious Kellogg’s Corn Flakes cereal and milk, or milk alternative, and favourite toppings, can be a perfect new way to get the New Year off to a great start!

In fact, studies have shown that a bowl of cereal and milk is packed with nutrients such as B vitamins, iron, calcium and vitamin D, helps maintain a healthier body weight when consumed regularly and is an excellent source of protein. And, with a serving of Kellogg’s Corn Flakes costing less than $1, including milk, it’s a nutritious and affordable choice to start every morning of the Year of the Rooster.

Kellogg Welcomes New Canadians
“Helping new Canadians feel at home in Canada and make the difficult adjustment to a new country just a little bit easier is a priority for us at Kellogg,” added Tomé. “That’s why, in addition to the special-edition box of Corn Flakes for Chinese New Year, we are deepening our relationship with new Canadians and their families by partnering with WelcomePack Canada.”
